The Economic and Social Council

Green Economy for the Sustainable Development of the Cities

The Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) serves as the central forum for discussing international economic and social issues, and for formulating policy recommendations addressed to Member States and the United Nations system. It is responsible for:

  • promoting higher standards of living, full employment, and economic and social progress;
  • identifying solutions to international economic, social and health problems;
  • facilitating international cultural and educational cooperation; and
  • encouraging universal respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms.

It has the power to make or initiate studies and reports on these issues. It also has the power to assist the preparations and organization of major international conferences in the economic and social and related fields and to facilitate a coordinated follow-up to these conferences. With its broad mandate the Council’s purview extends to over 70 per cent of the human and financial resources of the entire UN system. Environmental issues are not usually discussed by ECOSOC, however, given their major economic and social impact and the general “green” agenda at the UN in 2012, we decided to set up such an experiment.

Address to future delegates:

Honorable EMIMUN 2012 Delegates,

It is hard to express my anticipation for the up-coming conference and the prospect of meeting all of you in Dubai this January.

It is a great honor for me to be your Chairperson at ECOSOC with such a relevant and urgent item on the agenda as “Green Economy for the Sustainable Development of the Cities”. This is an issue of utmost importance nowadays as cities became both the main global producers and the main global polluters.

Note that ECOSOC agenda touches upon not merely environmental but in many ways economic and social aspects. ECOSOC delegates will be to define the links between these aspects and to propose the best enabling strategies for “greening” various urban sectors (buildings, transport, energy, vegetation and landscape, water, food, waste as well as infrastructure and digital technology) in order to promote environmentally sustainable development of the cities for the effective economic growth and social security and stability.

I believe that the debates on this issue would be especially significant in such an outstanding city as Dubai. So let us keep abreast of the times and make EMIMUN 2012 an exciting and useful experience!

Best regards,

Alina Bogatkova
